Sixteen Acres Civic Association Meeting           August 21, 2001  

                                                         Jean Masse—President, presiding

There are 147 current members paid up to date.

Thank You card was received from Christine Ratkiewicz for the gift for her new baby.

Thank You card was received from Dan Kelly for the donation to Hospice in memory of Dan’s father.

OLD BUSINESS:

16 Acres summer picnic at Camp Wilder was attended by about 60 people.  It was held on August 18, 2001.  There were lifeguards to watch over swimmers.  Many people brought lots of great food and the left over food was donated to a worthy cause.  The Community Police donated the hamburgs and hot dogs.  Thank You to all that helped. Everyone had a great time.

Treasurer’s Report by Karen Powell---Balance as of 8/21/01 is $1506.36.  Treasurer’s report was accepted as read.

September 4, 2001 a meeting will be held by City Council to appoint 1 or 2 more people to the Liquor License Commission.  More info. to follow.

Ward 3 Democratic Ice Cream Social is being held August 30, Gentile Apts.  Call 736-7759 or 788-6305 for more info.

Planning Dept & Code Enforcement Dept. will be issuing new rules and regulations about adding billboards and signs.

Power Car Wash will be opening on Cooley Street next go Bickford’s Restaurant.  An issue of drainage problems with water was brought up and Peter Sygnator—President of East Forest Park Association said those issues were brought up at past meetings and settled.

Greenleaf Skate Center at 1188 ½ Parker Street is now open.  Kids are very happy and things are going well.  Call Greenleaf  Community Center at 787-6440 or Recreation Office at 750-2652 or 787-6434 or General Park Info at 787-6440.

The Park behind Greenleaf is coming along very well.  It can be reached by Vincent Street, which is off Parker Street and then take a right.  There will be tennis and volleyball and much more.

Mandatory meeting at Church in the Acres will be held for all groups using the  church.  Info will be given out about what the church expects from groups using church.

By-Laws committee is looking for more people.  The By-Laws need to be looked over and updated.  Current committee members are Jim Gregory, Clodo Concepion., and Peter Fett.  Ed Mack volunteered to join.  More volunteers are needed. See any above member to join.

City Council Carol Lewis-Caulton spoke about the Liquor License Commission;  Walter Gould suggested that a member from each Neighborhood Council and Civic Assoc. should be added.  It should be Democrats and Republicans.  These people should be elected.  Call your city council members and voice your opinion.

NEW BUSINESS:

 Guest Speaker Peter Sygnator—President of the East Forest Park Civic Assoc. spoke about SUN (Springfield United Neighborhood), which has been meeting for a while now.  This group talks about issues like Housing, Code Enforcement, Day Care, Planning, and many other issues that affect all of us.   People are welcome to call Karen Powell at 796-4924, she is our Liason to bring our issues forward.

Special Permit from the Planning Board—This area is being looked at to upgrade.

Leadership Councils—Presidents of all Associations get together to meet and discuss issues. 

X-Mas Party is coming.  We need volunteers and input.  Please see Jean Masse if you have any ideas.

There are geese problems going on with people on Parker St. and Mill Pond.  Many issues are being talked about and trying to be handled.

Walley Brown suggested that we re-arrange our chairs and sit in a round circle and have our meeting.  Everyone seemed agreeable.

Western New England College is back in session and so are the parties.  Outer Belt and Beat Management and Jean Masse from 16 Acres Civic Assoc will write a letter to the mayor and Gale Candaras and others to try to get extra help.  Community Police money has almost run out.  Could Western New England College help to keep the Community Police going?  Community Police meet the 2nd Wed. at Colonial Estates.

Mary Gardner, Dan Kelly and Barbara Mancuso have been working on the 16 Acres islands.  Thank You.  We need a landscaper to help.  Please ask your friends and let a Board Member know you have found someone.

The island in front of Bernie’s is getting bad.  It was painted bright green.  We will write a letter.  A motion was made and seconded and passed.
