Sixteen Acres Civic Meeting                                                   May 21, 2002

 

 

Treasurer’s Report---there is a balance of $1,566.48.   A motion was made to accept the treasurer’s report, it was seconded and passed

 

Secretary report----Ruth Moorhouse will be late, Jean Masse read the minutes of the last meeting.  A woman was stating that there was some information missing from the Secretary report and Jean Masse said that Ruth goes by the tape and sometimes if the tape runs out or people do not speak clearly it is hard to understand the tape.

 

A motion was made and minutes were passed

 

Membership drive---there are 47 members that have renewed their membership and 4 new members

 

 

Guest speaker is Andy Arrosio from the YMCA

            Downtown YMCA is 1st branch

            Wilbraham is part of Assoc. of Greater Spfld, 2nd branch

            Capital Campaign for new branch going on now to build Wilbraham/Boston Rd

            150 year anniversary this year, New York is 1st YMCA, Mass is 2nd YMCA

            YMCA collaborates with 24 other organizations

            Working with Wilbraham/Monson Academy and Wilbraham Schools

            Working in Wilbraham at Stony Brook Camp

            Working with East Longmeadow School Department

            Camp Wilder is in its 6th year and it serves 200 kids in the summer

            Pre-School programs to active Older Adult programs, sports, chef courses, swim,             fitness classes, dance/jazz

            School Age Child Care—6 sites, 4 in Wilbraham, 2 in Spring Meadow/ Allen                         Park and 1 new site opening in East Brook Condominiums

            School Age Child Care serving about 120 kids everyday

            Stony Brook in Wilbraham serves about  400-500 students in the summer

            Capital Campaign is now trying to get donations from corporations, in January                         they will try to go to the public for help

            Looking for grant money for teen programs ages 13-16 group

            Cleaning up Camp Wilder and fixing up the golf course

            Interstate Park Value Center, a building built to help public get information about                the area

            Plans for a pool in the future

            Camp Evangaline will be run by the city

There are 5 camps run by the YMCA, Camp Webber in West Springfield, which  services 325-350 kids daily, Camp Seco in Forest Park, Camp Wilder, Stony Brook, and there are 70 satellite sites which are in Chicopee, West Springfield, Springfield, Agawam, East Longmeadow, Wilbraham, Hampden

There are scholarships available

There is a Reach Out For Youth Campaign, trying to raise money for student/parent help

 

There was a motion to sponsor a child for a summer program for $250.00, and an other motion was made and seconded and passed to table it until the next meeting.

 

Nominations for officers was held, Barbara, Doris, and Evelyn were  on the committee and helped, Elections will be held in June

 

SABIS International Charter High School has sent a ticket for the Sixteen Acres Civic Assoc. for someone who is interested in going

 

Springfield Schools are in serious trouble in many schools on subjects from MCAS, Truancy, and Discipline.  Springfield MCAS were the lowest in the state

 And over the line in Longmeadow, are some of the highest on the MCAS

Our property values are being threatened

Forming a committee to help the city and schools with many of the issues, Marshall Morality, Anne H, Doris, if you would like to be on the committee, please let any board member know

 

Someone mentioned that SABIS Charter School gets more money per student that public schools, and Richard tried to explain that it is not true

 

May newsletter—there was a mistake about the Summer Picnic, it will be on August 16, 2002 at CAMP WILDER

 

Karen Powell will be collecting money for the Walk for Hospice, at Spelt College, Karen is representing Large Company

 

Jean Masse has a copy of School Attendance & Truancy Policy for anyone who would like to see it, call Bob Aioli at City Council at 787-6170 with any questions

 

Neighborhood Empowerment Workshop Services are holding meetings on 5/1/02, 5/8/02, 6/5/02, they are free and open to the public.  Located at 253 King
Street, Spelt Community Outreach Parternership Center

 

Notice of Decision, Spring Meadow has off street parking

 

Subdivision going in on Parker St. and Frank St., the owner wants to build houses or a small mall is being built by Paul Sears

 

Project Bread---there will be free Summer meals for students, it will be held at some schools, call the Parent Information Center for details
